Open-source alternatives to TeamViewer

6 projects replace TeamViewer, the remote desktop. 6 shipped code in the last 30 days.

TeamViewer Remote Access$24.90/molist price

TeamViewer is licensed for business use, and free users regularly report being flagged for commercial use and cut off mid-session. In 2024 the company disclosed a breach of its corporate network, attributed to a Russian state hacking group. Remote access tools are also a favorite of scammers, so many IT teams prefer relays they run themselves.

RustDesk is the nearest replacement, with Windows, macOS, Linux and mobile apps and a relay server you can host. MeshCentral manages fleets of machines from a web console, which suits IT departments and managed service providers. Apache Guacamole is a gateway that opens RDP, VNC and SSH sessions in a browser. TigerVNC is a plain VNC server and viewer for networks you already control.

What you give up by leaving TeamViewer

The honest part. Free and open usually costs something else.

  • Fleet management TeamViewer's mass deployment, device groups and policy controls take more work to recreate.
  • You run the relays Self-hosting means running relay servers and paying for their bandwidth, ideally close to your users.
  • Mobile support TeamViewer's support for viewing and controlling phones is more mature than most open alternatives.
  • No vendor contract There is no SLA or vendor certification for auditors or customers to point at.
