Open-source alternatives to Wispr Flow

7 projects replace Wispr Flow, the AI voice dictation. 7 shipped code in the last 30 days.

Wispr Flow Pro$12/user/molist price

Wispr Flow is a dictation subscription, and your audio goes to its cloud to be transcribed and cleaned up. That is a problem for anyone dictating client notes, code or medical text. Local speech models such as Whisper and Parakeet now run fast enough on an ordinary laptop that the cloud step is optional.

Handy is the simplest: hold a key, speak, and text appears in whichever app has focus, on Mac, Windows or Linux. VoiceInk is a Mac app with per-app modes and optional AI cleanup. FluidVoice and OpenWispr cover similar ground with different interfaces. Expect to choose a model size yourself, trading speed against accuracy.

What you give up by leaving Wispr Flow

The honest part. Free and open usually costs something else.

  • Less cleanup Wispr Flow rewrites rambling speech into tidy text; local cleanup needs a language model you set up.
  • No phone app Wispr Flow works on iPhone, while most open-source dictation tools are desktop only.
  • Dictionary stays local Custom words and styles do not sync across devices the way a cloud account does.
  • Battery and memory Larger local models use noticeable memory and battery while they run.
