6 projects replace CapCut, the video editor. 6 shipped code in the last 30 days.
CapCut has moved many editing features behind its Pro plan, and its updated 2025 terms gave it wide rights over uploaded content, which alarmed creators. It also went dark briefly in the US in January 2025 alongside TikTok. Editors who just want to cut clips want a tool that cannot vanish or change its terms overnight.
OpenCut is the closest copy: a browser timeline editor with a similar layout, young but moving fast. Shotcut and Kdenlive are mature desktop editors for longer projects with many tracks. LosslessCut does one thing well, trimming and splitting footage without re-encoding. OpenShot is the gentlest start for beginners.
