Open-source UI design and prototyping for product teams
Open-source alternatives to Figma
7 projects replace Figma, the interface design tool. 7 shipped code in the last 30 days.
Figma charges per editor seat, and a team of designers and developers needs a lot of seats. Files live only in Figma's cloud in a closed format, so leaving means exporting frame by frame. Adobe's attempted purchase, dropped in 2023, made many teams think hard about that dependency.
Penpot is where most teams go. It runs in the browser, self-hosts with Docker, and stores designs as SVG with CSS-style layouts that developers can read. Graphite is a procedural vector and raster editor, closer to Illustrator than to a UI tool. OpenPencil can open .fig files, which helps when moving old work out.

What you give up by leaving Figma
The honest part. Free and open usually costs something else.
- Smaller plugin ecosystem Figma's plugins and community files far outnumber anything Penpot or the other projects offer today.
- Imports need cleanup Old .fig files often lose auto layout, component links or fonts on the way over.
- Fewer hires know it Most designers learned on Figma, so new team members may need time to adjust.
- Handoff is simpler Figma's Dev Mode is more developed; open tools have inspect panels, but less tooling around code export.
