Open-source alternatives to Miro

7 projects replace Miro, the online whiteboard. 6 shipped code in the last 30 days.

Miro Starter$8/user/molist price

Miro charges per member, and its free plan allows only three editable boards. Workshops and retros often include occasional guests, and paying a seat for each feels wasteful. Some teams also want their boards off a US vendor's cloud.

Excalidraw is the quick sketch tool, with a hand-drawn look, live collaboration and end-to-end encrypted rooms. tldraw is a fast infinite canvas and also an SDK other apps build on. draw.io is better for structured diagrams such as flowcharts and network maps. AFFiNE and Drawnix combine whiteboards with mind maps, and AFFiNE adds docs on the same canvas.

What you give up by leaving Miro

The honest part. Free and open usually costs something else.

  • Fewer templates Miro's library of workshop and retro templates is much larger than anything open source.
  • Facilitation tools Timers, voting and private mode for running workshops are mostly missing.
  • App embeds Live Jira cards and syncs with tools like Asana have no open-source equivalent.
  • Big sessions Boards with hundreds of live participants are proven at scale in Miro; self-hosted rooms less so.
